What it is for
A stretched canvas is wall art with depth: the image wraps around a wooden frame and hangs without glass.
Keep faces and text at least a few centimetres in from the edges so they stay on the front.
Dye sublimation
Sublimation prints the design onto transfer paper with dye ink; heat then turns the dye into a gas that bonds into a polyester coating or polyester fibre.
Colour becomes part of the surface rather than a layer on top, so it is vivid and does not crack or peel. It cannot print white: white in a design shows as the colour of the item itself, which is why sublimated items are white or pale.
There is no texture at all — on fabric you cannot feel the print, and on a mug it is under a smooth coating.
Designs that suit it
Paintings, landscapes and photographs suit the texture. The image wraps the sides, so whatever is at the very edge ends up on the depth of the frame.
The print area is on the front: 3,239 × 2,631 pixels, about 10.8 × 8.8 in at 300 dpi — a roughly square area. The studio generates the design at that size, so it is printed from a full-resolution file rather than an enlarged preview.
Full-colour photographs, paintings and edge-to-edge patterns. Less suited: designs that rely on white ink, and important detail right at seams, handles or edges where the transfer wraps.
