What it is for
A calendar is a gift that is looked at every day for a year, which is why photo calendars are a family tradition.
Dated calendars start on a fixed month; check the year in the product name.
Digital printing
Digital printing is high-resolution inkjet: pigment ink is laid onto paper, canvas, card or a label in fine dots.
It has the widest colour range of any method here, and the finest detail, which is why it is used for art prints.
The finish depends on the stock — matte, satin or gloss — not on the ink.
Designs that suit it
Twelve images, one per month, or one cover image and a clean grid.
The print area is on the front cover: 3,375 × 2,625 pixels, about 11.3 × 8.8 in at 300 dpi — a roughly square area. The studio generates the design at that size, so it is printed from a full-resolution file rather than an enlarged preview.
Photographs, paintings, maps and fine type. Less suited: very large flat areas of a single dark colour on matte stock, which can show slight banding up close.
Sentences that would suit it

“A full moon over the bay from our holiday room”
The Moon-Viewing Promontory, Utagawa Hiroshige, 1857. Public domain. Shown on our example matte vertical posters.
“People running across a bridge in the rain, for my sister in Tokyo”
