Fleece is thick, so fine detail softens slightly compared with a T-shirt. Lines and type should be a little heavier than you would draw them for paper.

Direct-to-garment printing works like an inkjet printer for fabric: water-based ink is sprayed into the fibres and cured with heat.

It prints full colour in one pass, so a photograph or a gradient costs the same as a single word. On dark fabric a white base layer goes down first so the colours stay true.

On light fabric the print is barely felt; over a white base on dark fabric it is slightly firmer, like a soft film.

How we check print quality

The front panel above the pocket is the main print area. A year, a place, a single image or a short phrase sits well there; very tall designs run into the pocket seam.

The print area is on the front: 3,461 × 2,306 pixels, about 11.5 × 7.7 in at 300 dpi — a wide, landscape area. The studio generates the design at that size, so it is printed from a full-resolution file rather than an enlarged preview.

Photographs, paintings, detailed illustration and small type all hold. Less suited: very fine hairlines and large solid blocks of colour on dark fabric, where the base layer is most noticeable.
