What it is for
A blanket is the most physical gift there is: used every night on a couch or a bed, and the thing people reach for when they are unwell or sad.
Plush and sherpa surfaces soften fine detail slightly; bold images look best.
Embroidery
Embroidery stitches the design in polyester thread. The artwork is converted into stitch paths, one thread colour at a time.
Colours are thread colours — a limited set, typically up to around a dozen in one design — so gradients and photographs cannot be reproduced.
The design is raised and textured, and it outlasts any ink: it will not crack, peel or fade in the wash.
Designs that suit it
Large photographs, paintings and patterns all work at blanket size. The whole face is printed, so the edges of the design show.
The print area is on the bottom left: 1,800 × 1,800 pixels, about 6.0 × 6.0 in at 300 dpi — a roughly square area. The studio generates the design at that size, so it is printed from a full-resolution file rather than an enlarged preview.
Monograms, initials, short words, simple logos and bold shapes. Less suited: photographs, gradients and lettering smaller than about 5 mm tall, which closes up in thread.
